What happens when a simple fourth-grade school project turns into a historic preservation effort using cutting-edge technology? Go behind the scenes in this Tech Insider interview.
In this episode of Tech Insider, we talk with Jesse Gutierrez, head of the scanning department at Original Survey Solutions (OSS), and his son Luke, along with OSS Owner William Paul, PLS, about their journey to preserve Mission Soledad through 3D laser scanning.
Luke’s assignment to build a California mission model became much more than glue and cardboard. With the help of his dad’s surveying expertise and the Leica RTC360 laser scanner, along with Will Paul’s enthusiastic support, they captured one of California’s lesser-known missions in incredible detail. Their work not only impressed classmates but also sparked excitement among historians and preservationists at the California Mission Foundation. From scanning in the desert to presenting 3D visualizations at a statewide conference, this story shows how technology, education, and history can intersect to create something unforgettable.
