Innovating Infrastructure: An Interview with Can-Explore’s Leaders

Tom Tardif and Michaël Vignola share how mobile mapping is transforming asset management and driving growth.

The field of infrastructure asset management is undergoing significant advancements, and Can-Explore has emerged as a trailblazer in innovation, especially in mobile mapping and 3D laser scanning technologies. Headquartered in Quebec City, Can-Explore extends its expertise to clients throughout North America and beyond.

We spoke with Tom Tardif (above left), Director of the Geomatics Department, and Michaël Vignola (above right), Head of Business Development, to learn how they are transforming the industry and what it takes to stay ahead in a competitive market.

What inspired Can-Explore to invest in mobile mapping technology?

Tom Tardif: Mobile mapping is an exciting and impactful technology that allows us to collect high-precision geospatial data in real-time. We decided to invest in our own system, the Leica Pegasus TRK 700 Neo, after the arrival of Ben (Benoît Lachapelle), a skilled engineer with extensive experience in mobile mapping. His expertise was the springboard we needed to maximize our system’s potential and make the most of what it has to offer.

Why did Can-Explore choose Leica for their mobile mapping needs?

Tom Tardif: The Leica Pegasus TRK 700 Neo allows us to take readings with absolute precision, down to 20 mm. To put it in perspective, scans can be done over several kilometers in an unprecedented amount of time, whether on a road, rail or even a waterway. We are the first in Quebec to use this latest model from Leica, which puts us at the forefront in terms of quality and reliability.

How has mobile mapping transformed your approach to projects?

Michaël Vignola: Mobile mapping has significantly changed how we approach projects, particularly in terms of speed and safety. This technology enables faster, more accurate, and cost-effective data collection, which minimizes the risk of missing important data in remote areas. For instance, we conducted a 15-kilometer survey in just half a day, a task that would have taken weeks using traditional methods. This efficiency allows us to attract new talent and handle larger projects more effectively.

What strategies have helped Can-Explore achieve rapid growth?

Tom Tardif: We’ve grown from a handful of surveyors to over 50 in just two years, a testament to our strong team chemistry and leadership. Our team leaders play a crucial role in maintaining cohesion and driving success. Delivering quality work consistently has helped us build a strong reputation, making referrals easy and cementing our status as a go-to name in the industry.

How would you describe the culture at Can-Explore?

Michaël Vignola: Our culture is all about innovation and keeping our clients and teams happy. We foster a flat organizational structure where ideas and opinions count. We keep things fun and connected with monthly gatherings and sports events. The diversity and excitement of our projects ensure that we never get bored.

What qualities do you look for in new talent?

Tom Tardif: We seek individuals with a thirst for knowledge and the ability to embrace change. Being a team player is crucial as we rely on each other to adapt to evolving technologies. Communication, openness, and collaboration are key to our success.

What challenges do you face when introducing advanced technologies to clients?

Michaël Vignola: One challenge is that many civil engineering and architecture firms are not yet accustomed to working with large point clouds and data processing. We work hard to educate our clients and demonstrate the advantages of faster data collection. By providing extra support, we make our services more accessible and help clients understand the value of adopting new technologies.

What advice would you give to other companies looking to adopt similar technologies?

Tom Tardif: There’s no magic recipe, but success involves training, communication, and collaboration, both internally and with clients. It’s essential to take the time to understand and test new technologies to know their limitations. While technology plays a significant role in our success, our people are just as important. Investing in the right talent is crucial.
