First Reactions to the Leica GS05 GNSS Smart Antenna

What stands out the most about the new Leica GS05 GNSS Smart Antenna? It’s not what you might think.

“You really have to see it.

On September 24, 2024, Leica Geosystems launched a new lightweight GNSS smart antenna with tilt compensation, the Leica GS05. The compact size and light weight of this new GNSS receiver are immediately evident. These characteristics make it easy to envision the benefits of combining it with a total station for use as a SmartPole.

But that’s not the most surprising capability of the new antenna.

According to Burke Asay, survey product and support manager for Leica Geosystems in the US and Canada, what he hears the most from the surveyors and professionals who get their hands on the technology for the first time is that they can’t believe the performance for the price.

“The performance of the GS05 is shocking to all of us,” he said in a recent webinar. “We got it, we looked at the spec sheet and said, ‘Hey, where is this going to fit?’ Then we saw that the GS05 really punches above its weight with its performance.”

Burke shared how he and other surveyors have tested the GS05 in different environments against the performance of comparative receivers from other brands. “We’ve been able to get a fix in heavy canopy situations,” he said. “That wouldn’t happen all the time—it depends on the satellite positioning. But the GS05 consistently outperforms the other brands of equipment on reliability and accuracy.”

“That’s what I’m hearing the most—that it punches above its weight,” he said. “You really have to see it.”

Jason Paris, a former survey party chief who now leads the Leica Geosystems team in California, achieves an RTK fixed correction under canopy using the new GS05. The performance of the new smart antenna is surprising even Leica Geosystems representatives.
